ReadingWe read for many reasons; to get information and ideas, to connect, to be transported to another world. Reading is a skill that is underdeveloped in many people and, often, they do not realize that they lack the skills to read critically, process information, and make inferences about what we have read. Being a good reader means understanding what is going on in a text at a surface level and at a symbolic level. The more someone reads, the more familiar they become with how language can be used to appeal to the emotional, intellectual, and spiritual side of their audiences. This will help them to become better writers.
There are three ways that we address the various skills good readers need to have: Silent reading at the beginning of class, completing quizzes on ReadTheory.org, and journaling on outcomes that are related to growing as readers.
